'Exercise Alley'

Northern Beaches Council, 2018

There was a call for more exercise opportunities in the public domain. From incidental exercise, to group orientated fitness opportunities - the message was clear. The 100% bespoke fitness equipment has been designed as a ‘collaborative’ or ‘demonstrative’ suite of exercise stations.

During the engagement phase undertaken by ARTSCAPE for the preparation of the Dee Why Town Centre Place Making and Public Art Strategy there was a call for more exercise opportunities in the public domain. From incidental exercise, to group orientated fitness opportunities - the message was clear.

As part of the design of Walter Gors Park, ARTSCAPE identified a portion of the park that was presently underutilised. The area - an important entry / egress point - was previously dark, concealed by overgrown vegetation and narrow. The response by ARTSCAPE was to brand this portion of the park ‘Exercise Alley’. An approach that aimed to welcome people, brighten the space and encourage passive surveillance from neighbouring residential buildings.

Exercise Alley was developed to appeal to fitness minded individuals. Six workout stations are provided to strengthen ones physique - including one station that caters to the elderly - to hone their motor skills. The 100% bespoke fitness equipment has been designed as a ‘collaborative’ or
‘demonstrative’ suite of exercise stations. This provides the option for up to three people to workout at the same time on the same apparatus.
